The Ultimate Meatball Recipe: A Delicious Journey with GertieBlu

Great to have you here at GertieBlu! Today, we’re setting the table for one of my all-time favorite comfort foods—meatballs. Whether you’re serving them over spaghetti, stuffing them into a sub, or simply enjoying them on their own, a well-made meatball is like the heart of a meal, bringing warmth and satisfaction to every bite.

In this post, I’ll be sharing my go-to meatball recipe that’s been a star in my kitchen for years. It’s easy to make, bursting with flavor, and perfect for any occasion. Let’s get started!

The Magic of Meatballs

Meatballs are a global culinary phenomenon, found in a variety of cuisines from Italian to Swedish, and even Middle Eastern dishes. What makes them so special is their versatility—you can use different types of meat, spices, and sauces to create endless flavor combinations.

My recipe is a classic Italian-inspired meatball, with a few personal touches that elevate it to the next level. The secret? A mix of beef and pork for richness, fresh herbs for brightness, and a hint of Parmesan for that umami punch.

Ingredients You’ll Need

For about 20 meatballs, you’ll need:

  • 1/2 lb ground beef
  • 1/2 lb ground pork
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs (preferably Italian-style)
  • 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1/4 cup chopped fresh parsley
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes (optional for a little heat)
  • Olive oil for frying

Instructions

  1. Prep the Mixture:
    • In a large bowl, combine the ground beef and pork. Add in the breadcrumbs, Parmesan, parsley, garlic, egg, and milk. Season with salt, pepper, oregano, and red pepper flakes.
    • Using your hands (or a wooden spoon if you prefer), gently mix everything together until just combined. Be careful not to overwork the mixture—this can make your meatballs tough.
  2. Shape the Meatballs:
    • Scoop out about 2 tablespoons of the mixture and roll it into a ball. Repeat with the remaining mixture. You should get about 20 meatballs.
  3. Cook the Meatballs:
    • Heat a large skillet over medium heat and add a few tablespoons of olive oil. Once hot, add the meatballs in a single layer, making sure not to overcrowd the pan.
    • Cook the meatballs for about 2-3 minutes on each side, until they are browned all over. You may need to do this in batches.
    • If you plan to add them to a sauce, you can transfer the meatballs to a simmering pot of marinara after browning them. Let them cook in the sauce for an additional 15-20 minutes to finish cooking through and to soak up all that delicious flavor.
  4. Serve and Enjoy:
    • Serve your meatballs over pasta, in a sub roll with melted cheese, or on their own with a side of garlic bread. Garnish with extra Parmesan and fresh basil for a true Italian touch.

Tips for Perfect Meatballs

  • Use Fresh Ingredients: Fresh herbs, garlic, and Parmesan really make a difference in flavor.
  • Don’t Overmix: Handle the meat mixture gently to keep your meatballs tender.
  • Try Different Meats: Experiment with ground turkey, chicken, or even lamb for a different twist.

The Final Bite

There’s something incredibly satisfying about a homemade meatball. Whether it’s the way they make your kitchen smell like an Italian restaurant or the way they melt in your mouth, meatballs are a dish that everyone loves.

I hope you enjoy this recipe as much as I do. Whether you’re cooking for family, friends, or just yourself, these meatballs are sure to impress. Keep experimenting and savoring every bite—after all, that’s what cooking is all about!

Happy cooking, and as always, stay flavorful!
